It’s awkward and uncomfortable to talk about, but to keep up with inflation and cost of living increases, you’re going to HAVE TO raise your fees at some point.
Hopefully several times, which means you are enjoying a LONG career in the spray tanning world!
The start of a new year is a great time to plan your rate increases, and it’s always a good idea to warn your clients ahead of time.
I like to give my clients 2-3 months notice, by letting them know my rates are going up in the new year. This gives them time to find a new spray tanner, if they choose to, or happily agree to the new price.
Depending on YOUR rates and the services you offer (mobile tanning should be more expensive than in-studio tans, for example,) a reasonable rate increase should be within $5-$25.
If your business is EXPLODING, and you’re having to turn clients away, it might be time to look into a larger rate increase than $5-$25 per tan. Or, adding additional artists as “backups” so you can keep up with demand, and not have to turn anyone away.
Keep in mind that you WILL lose some clients with a LARGE rate increase, but at the end of the day, this is how you make your living, and you need to continue growing as a business – whether it be by increasing your value as your experience and talent increases, or by sharing the workload and expanding your team.
So, as we near the end of another year, will you be raising YOUR rates?
